Storytelling is in our DNA

Storytelling is what connects us to our humanity. It is what links us to our past, and provides a glimpse into our future. Since humans first walked the earth, they have told stories, before even the written word or oral language. Through cave drawings and over fires, humans have told stories as a way to shape our existence. Things happen to us — the elements of a story — but as humans, we have unique perspectives, which shape how a story is relayed.

Storytellers learned early on that people like to hear stories with a beginning, a middle, and an end. We seem to be drawn to stories that have characters that look like us — or at least share characteristics we can relate to. We also desire to be drawn into storytelling and enjoy when a story builds up to a thrilling climax, followed by a satisfying conclusion. We want to use our imaginations, and sometimes don’t, and prefer to passively have a story told to us. Many of us enjoy being moved by a story, either emotionally, or viscerally, like in a good action film.

Storytelling is in our DNA

English novelist Philip Pullman wrote: “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”

LIFE OF I is a series conducted in cities across Canada, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Syria and Iraq.

The focus has been around lives stories which we stumble across as a part and parcel of our daily lives. The content and themes change from city to city e.g the ones in Toronto have ranged from diversity to sports. Those in Iran range could be about film and social justice. etc. So on and so forth.

So we make sense of our experiences, claim identities, interact with each other, and participate in cultural conversations through storytelling. These stories encourage us to view each other as compassionate human beings with a relatable story. As the Dalai Lama once said: “Compassion is the radicalism of our time.”

LIFE OF I is about flirting with the fine line between the comfortable and the uncomfortable through love, compassion and humor.
